WARDENS’ NOTICE 03/08

27 August 2008

WARDENS’ NOTICE 03/08

The Holy month of Ramadhan will start at the beginning of next week. The Islamic requirement that every Muslim must fast between sunrise and sunset during Ramadhan is strictly observed in Saudi Arabia. Any foreigner caught drinking, eating or smoking in public during those hours in Ramadhan runs the risk of arrest and deportation.

Ramadhan is a time of increased Islamic sensibility. We advise UK visitors and residents to observe modesty in dress and behaviour throughout the month. It is wise to follow requests from the Mutawwa, to avoid confrontation.

I would also like to draw your attention to the latest Foreign and Commonwealth Office Travel Advice for Saudi Arabia, last updated on 29 July 2008. You can read it in full on the FCO’s website www.fco.gov.uk/travel and then selecting Saudi Arabia, or the Embassy website www.ukinsaudiarabia.fco.gov.uk via the shortcut menu. Both these websites can be personalised so you are notified when the items which interest you are changed.
Relevant parts of the Travel Advice are summarised below:-

 There is a continuing high threat of terrorism in Saudi Arabia. We continue to believe that terrorists are planning further attacks, including against Westerners and places associated with Westerners in Saudi Arabia.

 You should take all necessary steps to protect your safety and should make sure you have confidence in your individual security arrangements. You should maintain a high level of vigilance, particularly in public places. You should avoid any large gatherings or demonstrations.  You should take sensible precautions for your personal and vehicle safety.

 You should remember that Islamic law is strictly enforced in Saudi Arabia.
